Frequently asked
sorular ve yanıtları

What is PMS and how common is it?
It's a complex of physical and emotional symptoms that appear a few days before menstruation and disappear once it begins. PMS affects nearly 80% of women of reproductive age. In 20-30% of women, the symptoms are so severe that they seriously affect their work and personal lives. It's not just a bad mood—it's a medical condition that requires professional attention.
What causes the syndrome?
The main cause is natural fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels during the second half of the menstrual cycle. Additional risk factors include vitamin deficiencies (especially calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D), chronic stress and sleep deprivation, an unhealthy diet with excess caffeine and sugar, a sedentary lifestyle, and a family history. Each woman has her own set of triggers.
Are hormonal contraceptives safe for PMS?
Yes, modern hormonal contraceptives are safe and effective for PMS. They stabilize hormonal fluctuations, significantly reducing symptoms. A doctor carefully selects the right medication, taking into account all contraindications, your medical history, and individual characteristics. Regular monitoring allows you to monitor the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.
What lifestyle changes help?
Regular physical activity (at least 150 minutes per week) significantly reduces symptoms. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein, low in caffeine and sugar, helps stabilize hormones. Adequate sleep (7-9 hours per night) is critical. Stress management through meditation, yoga, or therapy reduces emotional symptoms. Limiting alcohol consumption and quitting smoking improve overall well-being.
What are the main symptoms of PMS?
Physical symptoms include headaches and migraines, chest and abdominal pain, bloating and fluid retention, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and weakness. Emotional symptoms include irritability and aggression, anxiety and depression, mood swings, loss of concentration, and loss of interest in activities. Symptom intensity ranges from mild discomfort to severe impairment.
What treatments are offered?
We offer a comprehensive approach. Medication treatment includes hormonal contraceptives to stabilize hormone levels, vitamins and minerals (calcium 1200 mg/day, magnesium 400 mg/day, vitamin D), and NSAIDs for pain relief. Low-dose antidepressants are prescribed for emotional symptoms. Non-medication options include regular physical activity, a healthy diet, sleep management, yoga, meditation, and psychological support.
How long does treatment take?
The first results usually appear within the first month of taking the medication. Optimal results are achieved after 2-3 menstrual cycles, when the most effective treatment method becomes clear. Once stable improvement is achieved, maintenance therapy is initiated. Most women require long-term treatment, but some can discontinue the medication after normalizing their lifestyle.
When should you see a doctor?
Consult a gynecologist if PMS symptoms are seriously affecting your work, studies, or relationships; if symptoms are very intense or have changed suddenly; if home remedies aren't helping; if you want to try hormonal contraception or other treatments; if symptoms are interfering with your quality of life, don't wait—consult a specialist. Dr. Irina Ergyul will conduct a full examination and offer the best solution.
