Cervical Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a modern diagnostic method that allows a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a special optical device called a colposcope. The procedure makes it possible to detect pathological changes in the mucous membrane at the earliest stages, including precancerous conditions and early forms of cancer.

Indications

Colposcopic examination is recommended when there are factors requiring a more detailed assessment of cervical tissue.

  • Abnormal results of cytological testing (Pap test)
  • Detection of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Contact bleeding
  • Chronic inflammatory diseases of the cervix
  • Suspicion of dysplasia, erosion, or neoplastic processes
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of previously performed treatment

Types of Colposcopy

Different types of the procedure are used depending on the purpose of the examination.

  • Simple colposcopy — performed without additional diagnostic solutions and allows for an initial assessment of the mucosa
  • Extended colposcopy — involves the use of special reagents (acetic acid, Lugol’s solution) to help identify abnormal changes and atypical epithelial areas

How the Procedure Is Performed

The examination is carried out on an outpatient basis and usually does not require complex preparation. The patient is positioned on a gynecological chair, after which the doctor inserts a vaginal speculum and performs the examination using a colposcope, which does not come into contact with the tissues.

During extended diagnostics, special solutions are applied to the mucosa to assess tissue response and more accurately identify abnormal areas. If necessary, a targeted biopsy may be performed for further analysis.

Sensations and Safety

Colposcopy is considered a safe and painless procedure. In some cases, mild discomfort may occur due to the insertion of the speculum or the use of diagnostic solutions.

The method does not negatively affect the reproductive system and can be performed repeatedly when dynamic monitoring is required.

Preparation for the Examination

To obtain reliable results, it is recommended to follow simple preparation guidelines.

  • Avoid sexual intercourse for 24–48 hours before the procedure
  • Do not use vaginal medications or perform douching
  • Schedule the examination outside of menstruation

Advantages of the Method

  • High diagnostic accuracy
  • Early detection of precancerous changes
  • Possibility of dynamic monitoring
  • Ability to perform targeted biopsy

Results and Next Steps

After the examination, the doctor provides a conclusion and, if necessary, recommends additional diagnostic procedures or treatment. Colposcopy plays an important role in the prevention of cervical cancer and allows timely initiation of therapy.

Colposcopy is an essential part of comprehensive women’s health assessment, aimed at early detection of diseases, preservation of reproductive function, and prevention of serious complications.

Frequently asked
questions and answers

In which clinical situations is colposcopy indicated?
The examination is indicated for abnormal Pap smear results, suspected dysplasia, erosion, HPV infection, as well as in cases of chronic inflammatory processes and unexplained bleeding.
How is the colposcopy procedure technically performed?
The patient is positioned in a gynecological chair, after which the doctor examines the cervix using a colposcope without inserting it into the body. If necessary, diagnostic solutions are applied to assess tissue response.
Is special preparation required before the procedure?
It is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse, avoid using vaginal medications, and schedule the examination outside of the menstrual period.
Can colposcopy be replaced by other diagnostic methods?
No, colposcopy is a unique method of visual assessment of the epithelium and complements, rather than replaces, cytology and other examinations.
How does colposcopy differ from a standard gynecological examination?
Unlike a standard examination, colposcopy is performed with magnification and enhanced lighting, allowing detection of microscopic changes in the epithelium, vascular patterns, and lesion boundaries that are not visible during a routine exam.
Is colposcopy painful and is anesthesia required?
The procedure is painless as it does not involve tissue damage. Mild discomfort may occur due to the use of a speculum or application of diagnostic solutions.
On which day of the menstrual cycle is it best to perform colposcopy?
The optimal time is immediately after menstruation, when the mucosa is most accessible for evaluation.
How informative is colposcopy for HPV infection?
The method allows detection of characteristic epithelial changes associated with HPV and helps determine the need for further examination or treatment.
