The Story of Samal Hanım and Talgat Bey: A Journey to Parenthood Through IVF
Every day, as a women’s health doctor, I witness the incredible strength of the human spirit and the vast possibilities of modern science. The path to parenthood is always unique, and each story, filled with hopes and expectations, serves as a source of inspiration. Today, I want to share one such story—the journey of Samal Hanım and Talgat Bey, which began with a responsible decision. One of the first key choices was about the number of embryos to transfer.
Trust and Collaborative Strategy
According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM, 2025), single embryo transfer (SET) is the gold standard to reduce the risks of multiple pregnancies. However, studies from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE, 2024) show that double embryo transfer (DET) can increase the overall chances of pregnancy, though it comes with a higher likelihood of twins. Considering all factors and the couple’s desire to maximize the chances of success on the first attempt, we decided to transfer two embryos. This decision marked the starting point of our shared journey, built on trust and belief in success.
Statistics and Chances of Success
Together, we reviewed statistical data to weigh the pros and cons. According to ESHRE (2024), the average success rates for single and double embryo transfers differ significantly:
| Procedure | Average Success Rate (ESHRE, 2024) |
|---|---|
| Single Embryo Transfer (SET) | 40–45% |
| Double Embryo Transfer (DET) | 60–65% |
Despite the potential risks, we opted for the transfer of two embryos to maximize the chances of achieving the long-awaited pregnancy.
Science Confirms the Miracle: hCG
Two weeks after the transfer, we received the results of the hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test. hCG is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the developing embryo’s cells immediately after implantation in the uterine wall. In reproductive medicine, measuring its level two weeks post-transfer is the earliest and most reliable indicator of pregnancy. Its growth dynamics are of great diagnostic importance, and we monitor it every 48 hours. Normal growth indicates a healthy pregnancy, while very high levels may suggest a multiple pregnancy. In our case, Samal Hanım’s hCG level was elevated, leading us to suspect twins, and we eagerly awaited ultrasound confirmation.
Double Joy: Ultrasound and the Thrill of Anticipation
During the first ultrasound, two tiny, barely discernible embryos appeared on the screen—two little "peas" promising double joy. At the 12-week scheduled ultrasound, it was confirmed that we were expecting a boy and a girl. A follow-up at 16 weeks further confirmed the couple was expecting twins of different genders. We shared this moment together, anticipating the upcoming double happiness.
Challenges and Courage: Carrying Twins
Managing a twin pregnancy is always a complex and responsible process requiring special attention. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG, 2024), the risks of miscarriage and preterm birth are significantly higher compared to singleton pregnancies. Samal Hanım bravely endured all challenges: persistent lower back pain, swelling, sleep disturbances, and general discomfort. We developed a personalized pregnancy management plan, including tailored exercises, nutritional recommendations, and regular monitoring to minimize risks and ease her condition.
The Birth of Amir and Armine: The Reward of a Shared Journey
Finally, the long-awaited day of delivery arrived. Thanks to our collaborative preparation and coordinated efforts, healthy and strong babies were born: Amir and Armine. Achieving success with the first IVF attempt is undoubtedly a great joy and stroke of luck. Their story is a beautiful example of how a comprehensive approach, modern technology, and deep trust between doctor and patient can lead to a happy outcome. The story of Samal Hanım and Talgat Bey is an inspiring testament to how modern medicine, faith, and joint efforts can transform lives and instill hope in those just beginning their journey. As a doctor, there is no greater joy than seeing my patients find happiness.
