These are typical signs of a vaginal yeast infection. About 75% of women experience it at least once, and around 50% have recurrent episodes. It is the second most common condition after bacterial vaginosis.

Causes

  1. Stress
  2. Diabetes
  3. Long term antibiotic use
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Breastfeeding
  6. Use of contraceptives
  7. Estrogen therapy
  8. Zinc or biotin deficiency
  9. Weakened immune system
  10. HIV infection

Symptoms

  1. Itching and thick white discharge
  2. Redness and swelling of the vulva
  3. Pain during urination
  4. Pain during intercourse
  5. Burning sensation in the vagina

Diagnosis

Yeast infection is often diagnosed during examination due to its typical symptoms. Laboratory tests may be used if needed.

Disease course

  • Acute form develops quickly and responds well to treatment.
  • Chronic form tends to recur and is harder to treat.
  • During pregnancy, symptoms may persist but usually resolve after childbirth.

Treatment

Short term treatments are effective in acute cases. Tablets, vaginal suppositories, and creams are commonly used.

Chronic cases require:

  1. Treatment of underlying conditions
  2. Long term antifungal therapy
  3. Restoration of vaginal flora
  4. Preventive treatment

Self treatment is not recommended. Consultation with a doctor is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment.
