Ureaplasmosis

Ureaplasmosis causes and treatment

Ureaplasmosis is a very common infection and one of the most frequently encountered sexually transmitted infections. However, there is still debate about whether it should always be considered a disease. Ureaplasma can be found in 60% of healthy women and 30% of newborn girls. It is less common in men and is considered a conditionally pathogenic microorganism.

Cause

Ureaplasma is similar in size to large viruses and lacks a cell wall. It can break down urea, which is why it is usually found in the urinary tract. Transmission occurs mainly through sexual contact, but infection may also occur during childbirth.

Symptoms

The incubation period is about one month. The infection may remain asymptomatic for a long time. Symptoms may include vaginal discharge and burning during urination. If immunity decreases, inflammation may develop.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, ureaplasmosis may become active and lead to miscarriage or preterm birth. With proper treatment, a healthy pregnancy is possible.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes culture tests, PCR, and blood tests. These methods help determine the presence and level of infection.

Treatment

Treatment is usually carried out with antibiotics. Choosing the correct medication is important. Both partners should be treated.

Prevention

Prevention includes condom use and regular medical check-ups.
