Herpes. What is it

Herpes is a viral disease caused by the herpes virus, characterized by grouped blister-like eruptions on the skin and mucous membranes.

About 90% of the world’s population is infected with herpes viruses. Studies show that by the age of 18, more than 90% of urban residents are infected with at least one type of herpes virus. Genital herpes is especially common and is transmitted sexually.

The herpes virus most often affects the skin, eyes, oral mucosa, genital mucosa, and the nervous system. Cold exposure and weakened immunity contribute to its development.

Herpes is transmitted through direct contact and household items, and can also spread through airborne droplets.

The virus enters the body through mucous membranes, spreads through the blood and lymph, and settles in nerve cells. It cannot be completely removed and remains in the body for life.

Types of herpes viruses

  • Herpes simplex remains in the body for life;
  • Type 1 herpes usually affects the mouth area;
  • Type 2 herpes affects the genital area;
  • Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

Genital herpes

Genital herpes can affect the whole body and becomes more severe when immunity is weakened.

In women, symptoms include lower abdominal pain, discharge, itching, and urinary discomfort. Fever and headaches may occur.

Blisters form, then turn into ulcers and heal within about a week.

Complications in women

Herpes can cause:

  • cervical cancer;
  • miscarriage;
  • severe infections in newborns.
Treatment of herpes

There is no guaranteed cure for herpes.

However, medications can effectively control symptoms and improve quality of life.
