Can Pregnant Women Drive

A pregnant woman can drive at any stage of pregnancy, however, there are some особенности of her condition that should be considered:

  • Nausea and vomiting are common, especially during the first 3 months,
  • Dizziness may occur (usually due to low blood pressure or fluctuations in blood sugar levels),
  • Lower back pain is common,
  • Leg muscle cramps,
  • The growing uterus puts pressure on the bladder, causing frequent urination,
  • Distraction and slight memory decline are common (these usually pass about 3 months after childbirth).

Therefore, it is important to prepare for driving in advance and follow simple rules.

Driving Rules for Pregnant Women

Your driving experience should be sufficient for confident and safe driving. Always keep water and snacks in the car (for example, dried fruits such as dried apricots, figs, prunes, walnuts, almonds, or fresh fruits like bananas and apples).

Before your trip, check:

  • Whether the vehicle inspection is up to date,
  • Whether there is enough fuel,
  • Whether the first aid kit is not expired,
  • Make sure you have your pregnancy medical record and passport with you.

Use comfortable headrests and lumbar support cushions to reduce discomfort and pain. Adjust the driver’s seat so that there is enough space between the steering wheel and your abdomen (about a palm’s width). You can also slightly raise the steering wheel if needed.

How to Wear a Seat Belt During Pregnancy

Adjust the seat belt correctly: the upper part should pass between the breasts and above the abdomen, and the lower part should be placed under the abdomen. Do not worry, this will not harm the baby.

If the seat belt is too short, you can purchase extenders or special adapters for pregnant women.

Long-distance driving alone is not recommended during pregnancy. It is better to have someone accompany you. Take breaks every hour to walk, eat, or use the restroom.

Do not drive:

  • If you feel unwell,
  • In плохих погодных условиях.

Before leaving, plan your route in advance to avoid traffic and choose the most convenient route. You can also check in advance where gas stations and cafes are located to rest if needed.

By following these recommendations, you can drive comfortably throughout your pregnancy. Have a safe journey!
